Books make us better writers.
Juicy, complicated books. The kind you can't skim. Books with sentence structure that inspires you to pause and appreciate the beauty of prose. And if you must use AI, use it like a coach. I share my Writing Coach AI Prompt at the end.
Books do more than entertain.
They condition our brains to see new patterns, expand our vocabularies, and think more critically. And because we tend to mirror what we're consuming, well-written books help us become better writers by showing us how rhythm, syntax, and word selection work to create meaning.
It can be tempting to let AI write for you.
The speed alone is seductive when you’re under a time crunch. And if you’re self-conscious about your writing, it may feel less risky to delegate. But it can be more risky to delegate to a robot if you don’t know what ‘good’ looks like. Or how the robots really work.
So try this:
Write as if you're talking to your best friend over a well-crafted old fashioned. Check for spelling and grammar mistakes. Add anything you need to support your point. Subtract filler. But keep your words and flow intact.
I bet it's more interesting to read than any AI version.
And the reason lies in the nature of generative AI.
It uses pattern recognition. It won’t deliver anything surprising. It relies on training material. It won’t come up with anything new—that’s your job, and it’s a critical one. Because new is what gets noticed. Remembered.
AI output may be impressively polished, but it takes your unique voice, averages it out into a predictable pattern, and places it onto a trending framework. The result lacks everything that makes you YOU. Your voice. Your unique cadence. All stripped out and blended into a predictable average. Congrats, you made meatloaf.
The choice is yours.
You can become a better writer by reading books and practicing your writing.
Or you can use AI and join many others doing the same and producing the same level of work.
But there’s a third option.
One that harnesses the power of new technology to make you truly better: You can use AI as a writing coach. Ask it to deliver feedback to help you improve the depth of your ideas, quality of your writing, grammar, and flow. But always make the edits yourself.
Want a prompt to see how it works?
Use my writing-coach prompt to get feedback without the rewrites. You’ll learn how to write in your own voice without resorting to the averaging-out that makes AI-generated writing bland and sterile.
People gravitate towards the unexpected.
And your unique voice may just be what captures their attention and takes you from invisible to memorable.
